| Autism
Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS):
The ADOS has become the standard instrument
for assessing autism and PDD across age, developmental level,
and language skills. Dr. Barbara Webb offers 2-day workshops
where participants will learn how to use the ADOS to assess,
determine educational eligibility, and develop present levels
of functioning. Instructional methods of the workshop will
include lecture, a videotaped demonstration of administration,
hands-on practice administration, scoring, and discussion.
The workshop gives 12 contact hours of continuing education.
Workshop is equivalent to WPS-sponsored workshops.
School Psychologists, Speech/Language Pathologists, and Occupational
Therapists are strongly urged to participate in the workshop.
Additional participants may include Special Education Teachers,
Social Workers, and Behavioral Interventionists. It is beneficial
for a school team to participate together to develop a better
understanding of assessment procedures and eligibility decisions
of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Maximum 25 participants per
workshop, recommend 12 – 16 participants.

Autism
Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R):
The ADI-R is a comprehensive structured
interview that provides a thorough assessment of individuals
suspected of having autism spectrum disorders. It is
also highly useful in educational planning. A trained
interviewer questions a parent or caretaker who is familiar
with the developmental history and current behavior
of the individual being evaluated. The interview can
be used to assess both children and adults, with a mental
age above 2 years, 0 months.
The 2-day workshop includes lecture, a videotaped demonstration
of administration, hands-on practice administration,
scoring, and discussion. The workshop gives 12 contact
hours of continuing education. Maximum 50 participants.

Smaller
Learning Communities:
Through an initiative
from the US Department of Education, the concept of
smaller learning communities is garnering a lot of attention
in the high school setting. Sometimes called "School
within a School", the SLC creates career focused
clusters or academies within the structure of a traditional
high school. Curriculum is customized to be specific
to the particular career focus. As an example, standard
Composition taught in a Law and Human Services Academy
could focus on writing of legal briefs or police reports
while still meeting all state and federal standards
for the subject. Students are allowed to self select
their academy and research has shown a dramatic retention
and graduation rate in SLC schools since the student
is engaged in a subject of interest and motivated to
be in school.
